Stop by the Locke Street Farmers’ Market survey, they are trying to improve their market and if you live or work and hang out in the area they’d love to hear from you! (Only 6 questions).

Pick fruit with the Hamilton Fruit Tree Project this summer!

June 8, 2011 § 1 Comment

A really amazing project in Hamilton is the Hamilton Fruit Tree Project. There are so many people with fruit trees in their backyard who don’t take advantage of their harvest. So the HFTP volunteers visit houses with fruit trees and pick the fruit. One third of the fruit goes to the local food back, one third to the household whose tree was picked, and one third to the volunteers. It is a project common to many cities, Vancouver, Toronto and Guelph to name a few, but when the Hamilton project started in 2005 it was the first of its kind in Ontario.

Environment Hamilton’s Juby Lee coordinates the HFTP. In Green Living she said, “People assume that if [the fruit] is from someone’s backyard, it’s not as good as if it was professionally managed. People are really surprised not just that the project exists but the quality of that food.”

Last year the HFTP harvested 13,300 lbs of peaches, apples, pears, grapes and sour cherries. A lot of that, probably most of it I would I guess, probably would have fallen to the ground and composted itself naturally. But instead it provided food for local food banks, strengthened the community by bringing people and neighbours together, and made everyone a little less reliant on the supermarket, since they were eating produce grown in Hamilton!

And you know who is happily bagging pears in the above photo? Our very own Alex Bissley (black tank top, curly blond hair), co-host of The Grapevine!

It would be a great day trip to do with kids! You can get them outside, volunteering time, engaging with the community and local food system and at the end of the day you can eat some fresh fruit that you picked together! If you want to get involved, volunteer or offer your fruit tree for picking, visit the Fruit Tree site, email coordinator Juby Lee jlee(at)environmenthamilton.org or call her at 905-549-0900.

Watch this four minute video with Juby at Dundurn Castle to learn more!

Vote for Neighbour to Neighbour Community Gardens in Hamilton

May 28, 2011 § Leave a comment

Have you heard about this? There is still two weeks (deadline June 14) to vote for the Keg’s Anniversary Thanks a Million Grant Program. They are going to award one million dollars among 40 winners across various Keg communities – that’s $25,000 each.

Neighbour to Neighbour would like to win your support in order to establish some community gardens across Hamilton. The winner will be announced June 29th. Let’s make this happen for our city! Vote! Vote!

“1 in 5 people fall under the poverty line in Hamilton Ontario. These people have a very difficult time providing the basic items for their families such as food. The Neighbour to Neighbour Community Gardens will help these people to feed their families. Neighbour to Neighbour has been in food access for 25 years and we have had a community garden during that time.

Neighbour to Neighbour partners with other organizations such as churches, schools and cultural groups to host the sites. Neighbour to Neighbour then provides all the start up items required to grow a community garden such as plants , seeds, soil , lumber , rain barrels , tools , equipment , sheds , etc. The host site provides volunteers and water. Neighbour to Neighbour then refers their clients to the community gardens closest to their home. By increasing the number of community garden plots we will be able to serve more people in need closer to their own neighbourhoods.

Currently Neighbour to Neighbour has 5 organizations waiting to have a garden created at their site. 2 schools , 2 churches and one cultural group are wanting to start a garden. We have already completed the planning stages, once we have the items we will have a planting day where we will organize groups of people to create the gardens at the sites. Planting will happen the same day. All gardens will be starting off small and working on a long range sustainable plan to grow.

This whole program will last during growing season. In November, harvesting season will occur and the program will be over for the year. The gardens will be here next year , and with all the equipment needed and seed saving techniques , we will be ready to go. The grant money will be use 100% for gardening equipment for 5 new gardens. This will break down to $5,000. Per garden.”

How GOOD does our downtown taste?! Eat there this weekend

May 10, 2011 § 1 Comment

From The Hamilton Spectator, by Dan Kislenko: Hamilton’s core will hear the patter of more feet than usual next Saturday when the annual Tastes Of Downtown restaurant walking tour returns.

It’s a series of themed hikes to downtown restaurants, where guests get to try a specialty food sample and a libation before moving to the next destination on foot. Each group will be conducted by a celebrity guide.

Tastes Of Downtown takes place May 14 starting at 11 a.m. and winding down at 4 p.m., followed by a wrap-up party at London Tap House until 6.30 p.m. Proceeds go to Goodwill/ The Amity Group to support their mission to help people overcome employment barriers in Hamilton.

There are three tours, each featuring five restaurants. As the popularity of the event has grown in the last few years, tickets are still available only for the downtown tour, a group consisting of Acclamation Bar & Grill, Ventura’s Signature Restaurant, My-Thai Restaurant, Tailgate Charlie’s and Flavour Of Himalaya.

The two other tours are sold out. They are the international tour, which includes Ya Man! Caribbean Cuisine, Brownies Downtown Fine Food & Spirit, Barbarossa’s Café, La Cantina Ristorante Italiano, and London Tap House. The metropolitan tour stops at Wass Ethiopian Restaurant & Bar, One Duke, The Augusta House, Incognito Restaurant & Catering, and Capri Ristorante Italiano.

Tickets for Tastes Of Downtown cost $60 each, all included, and can be obtained by calling 905-526-8482 ext. 311, or by email at events@goodwillonline.ca.
